Located in the Lowcountry between Charleston, SC and Savannah, GA, Hilton Head Island is one of the east coast’s most beloved vacation destinations. In fact, Travel + Leisure has rated the South Carolina gem as the best island in the Continental U.S. for three consecutive years.
Lady and I stopped here during a road trip to Florida from Virginia, and while we didn’t spend too much time on the island, we found plenty of pet-friendly places to visit and even asked some of the locals where they like to take their dogs.
If you’re thinking about spending your next getaway in this Lowcountry paradise, here are some dog-friendly activities in Hilton Head Island that we give “two paws up.”

The Best Dog-Friendly Activities in Hilton Head Island
1. Dining in the Hilton Head Dog-Friendly Restaurants
Hilton Head is known for its incredible seafood restaurants, and dog parents like yourself will be happy to know that most of them are also pet-friendly! Here are just a handful that came highly recommended by the locals and eateries we had the chance to visit ourselves.
- Skull Creek Boathouse: There isn’t a person I know who has been to Hilton Head Island and hasn’t recommended Skull Creek Boathouse, so naturally, I had to visit for myself just to see what the hype was all about. After enjoying lunch at this creekside eatery, I can definitely understand why so many people love this place. Not only are the waterfront views completely captivating, but the food is absolutely delicious! The spacious outdoor patio loves dogs, so you and your pooch will be able to find a spot by the water and enjoy a delicious meal together.
- Old Oyster Factory: This waterfront restaurant has been rated one of the “Top 100 Scenic View Restaurants” by OpenTable. It also boasts five different menus to choose from and a variety of succulent seafood selections such as peppered salmon, steamed shrimp, and crab cakes. If you bring your four-legged friend along, you’ll be able to grab a seat on the outdoor patio overlooking the water. We highly recommend coming here in time to watch the sunset! You’ll thank us later.
- Skillets Cafe and Grill: Lady and I came here for breakfast the last day of our visit, and I couldn’t have been more impressed with the service or the food. It’s not very often that I dine in a restaurant that offers an exclusive Doggie Menu! While I dug into a savory crepe and eggs, Lady enjoyed a small bowl of scrambled eggs with little pieces of bacon. Needless to say, she devoured every bite, and I’m sure your pup will too!
- The Crazy Crab: The award-winning crab legs and spectacular waterfront views make the Crazy Crab a must for your Hilton Head bucket list! The best part is that there are two locations on the island to choose from. One is located in Harbour Town while the other is just off the William Hilton Parkway. This way, you and your pup will easily be able to visit the restaurant that is most convenient. The covered outdoor patio is pet-friendly and the perfect spot for you and your dog to enjoy live music during the summer, lovely water views, and a full menu of irresistible Lowcountry fare.
2. Burke’s Beach
Most dogs love a good day at the beach just as much as we do. That’s why we just had to make a stop at Burke’s Beach, which is arguably the most popular dog-friendly beach on the island.
This wide-open stretch of shoreline is the perfect place for you and your dogs to lounge in the sun, take a dip in the Atlantic, and simply enjoy each other’s company. The beach is also located adjacent to Chaplin Community Park, which just happens to be home to the Hilton Head dog park! That way, even if you’re not a fan of the beach, you can bring your dogs to the park to run around freely and make new friends.
*Quick Note* Please keep in mind that Burke’s Beach is pet-friendly before 10 am and after 5 pm Memorial Day through Labor Day. Your pets will be welcome anytime after these dates.
3. Alder Lane Beach
If you and your furry friend would like to get away from the crowds, Alder Lane Beach Access is a great option!
Unlike typical Hilton Head beaches, Alder Lane boasts a serene and quiet setting not far from South Forest Beach next to the Marriott Grande Ocean Resort. You’ll also find a variety of amenities that make it easy to spend a full day at the beach including beach matting, public restrooms, and outdoor showers.
*Quick Note* Much like Burke’s Beach, Alder Lane Beach does have seasonal pet restrictions. From April 1st to September 30th, dogs will only be permitted before 10 am and after 5 pm. They are welcome to join you anytime during the off-season.
4. Dolphin Cruises
Taking a cruise through the waters of Hilton Head in search of marine life is a very popular tourist activity on the island, and now your dogs will have the chance to join you for this unforgettable adventure! Both Vagabond Cruises and Captain Mark’s Dolphin Cruises allow dogs onboard their vessels, but be sure you bring a leash and water for your pet!
Also, don’t forget your cameras so you can snap a few shots of your dog admiring the dolphins that swim by to say hello!
