More About the Fort De Soto Dog Beach
As the largest park in the Pinellas County Park System, Fort De Soto offers a wide variety of outdoor activities. For pet parents, a visit to the dog beach is an absolute must!
A section of Fort De Soto’s breathtaking shoreline is exclusively reserved for dogs and their owners, making it the perfect spot to let your pup run and play off-leash while meeting new furry friends.
The dog beach is surrounded by thousands of acres of protected land and bordered by some of the cleanest ocean water in Florida. Sometimes, you’ll find the water is crystal clear, but depending on the wind, surf, and tide, you may find the water more blueish-green.
You and your dog will feel as if you have been transported to paradise as you soak in the sun, swim in the warm and inviting Gulf, and enjoy the spectacular views of the famous Sunshine Skyway Bridge.
After a full day on the beach, head over to the nearby Paw Playground for a water break and to wash all the sand and seawater from your dog’s coat. There are two separate fenced-in areas for small dogs and large dogs at the playground, but the beach is open to all dogs of any breed, shape, and size.
Directions to the Fort De Soto Dog Beach
To get to Fort De Soto Park, you’ll need to drive through Tierra Verde, pass a toll, and pay $5 to get into the park. This price really is a steal compared to other Florida West Coast parks, especially considering what you’ll get to experience for such a small amount.
Remember that the toll must be paid IN CASH, so be sure to have your dollar bills ready! Follow the signs to the paw playground and you’ll find the parking lot. From there, follow the sandy path to the Fort De Soto dog beach.
What to Bring
Enjoying a long and successful beach day means coming prepared, so be sure you have everything you need to ensure you and your pup will stay safe and hydrated.
A beach umbrella or tentbrella is a great way to provide some shade for you and your dog. Also, pack a cooler full of water and a dog bowl. Hydration is extremely important while you’re at the beach!
If your pup likes to play, bring along a few of their favorite toys or a ball to toss around on the sand or in the water. You also won’t want to forget some extra towels and poop bags!
*Quick note* While at the Fort De Soto dog beach, it’s always a good idea to introduce yourself to your neighbors.
At some point, your dogs will be in their area and then their dogs will be in yours. Before you know it, they’ll be sharing water bowls. Take the opportunity to make a new friend – or several!
